How to Play Wordle

Wordle is a word-based puzzle game that was created by a software engineer named Josh Wardle and released to the public in October 2021. The game was actually created several years before that (in 2013), but its inventor didn’t realize its potential and even abandoned it for a while. It wasn’t until 2021 that Josh decided to share the game with others – and the rest is history.

The puzzle is composed of six rows of five empty tiles (or boxes) each. The goal is to guess a five-letter word in only six tries. As the game progresses, the color of each tile will change to indicate if the letter is correct and in the right spot (green), correct but in the wrong spot (yellow), or incorrect and not in the five-letter word (grey).

For the uninitiated, these are the basics of how to play Wordle:

  1. Open the Wordle website and click Play.
  2. Start by typing any five-letter word using the keyboard. After typing the word, tap or press Enter.
  3. After every guess, each tile will change color to indicate how close you are to correctly guessing the word. Green means that the letter and its position are correct, yellow means that the letter is correct but its position is not, and grey means that the letter and its position are incorrect. The corresponding keys on the keyboard will also change color.
  4. Continue guessing and typing five-letter words. Remember that you only have a maximum of six attempts, so you have to make intelligent and calculated guesses using the colored tiles as your guide.
  5. If you’ve guessed the correct five-letter word, all the tiles in the word will turn green. Otherwise, the correct answer will be revealed after you’ve made all six guesses.

As you can see, Wordle is so easy and simple to play. But despite its ease and simplicity, Wordle can really test your mettle, which is why millions of people are addicted to it. If you have ambitions to be a Wordle master, we’ve got several tips and tricks to help you solve even the trickiest puzzle.

Wordle Tips and Tricks

We’ve compiled a few tips and tricks that you can use to succeed in Wordle and build up an impressive winning streak. These strategies have been proven and tested to improve your chances of winning in Wordle even if you don’t have an extensive vocabulary.

Start with the vowels

There are only five vowels in the English alphabet (A, E, I, O, U), but most words contain at least one vowel. The first thing you should do in Wordle is to type a word that has three or four different vowels, such as “QUIET” or “AUDIO”. This allows you to quickly determine which vowels can be used in your subsequent guesses and which ones should be disregarded.

Use the most common consonants

According to the Reader’s Digest, the most common consonants in the English language are R, T, N, S and L. To increase your chances of winning, you should try using these consonant letters, along with any of the five vowels, in your first two or three guesses. Examples of words that you can use are “TRAIL” and “STONE”.

On the flip side, you must also avoid the least-used consonants such as Z, Q, X and J. Though it’s possible that the Wordle answer will feature any of these letters, the chances are lower compared to other consonants.

Don’t repeat incorrect letters

As much as possible, you should avoid repeating incorrect letters (grey tiles) in your subsequent guesses. For example, if you’ve entered “PASTE” and the letters P, T and E are incorrect, then it doesn’t make sense to guess “PLATE”. You’ll only be wasting a guess and limiting your chances to uncover the right and wrong letters. Only use the correct (green or yellow tiles) and unused letters in your subsequent guesses.

However, if you can’t think of any other word to guess, it’s alright use an incorrect letter in order to narrow down the answer.

Avoid plural words

We know that it’s tempting to use plural words if you can’t thing of anything else to guess. It’s just so convenient to attach the letter “s” to the end of the word, right?

Actually, the New York Times has already announced that they will no longer be using plural words ending in “S” or “ES” (such as “MAILS” or “FOXES”). However, plural words without those endings, such as “TEETH” or “GEESE”, will still be used as answers.

You can still guess plural words ending in “S” or “ES”, and they will be accepted as valid, but keep in mind that they will not show up as the Wordle of the day.

Have Fun!

Not everyone has a perfect vocabulary, so don’t be afraid to look up the Wordle of the day if you have difficulties in guessing the answer correctly. Though Wordle is a fun and easy game, it can be mentally challenging at times, so there’s no shame in taking the easy way out. But if you want to sleep better at night, we recommend using the provided hints and clues to help you solve the puzzle honestly.
