Tech Pilipinas is committed to practicing journalism that is honest, fair, and accountable. This Code of Ethics defines the principles that guide our editorial decisions, our relationships with sources, and our responsibilities to our readers.
Editorial Independence
Tech Pilipinas operates free from external influence. Our editorial decisions – what stories we cover, how we frame them, and what conclusions we draw – are made solely by our editorial team based on journalistic merit.
We do not allow advertisers, sponsors, business partners, government agencies, or any other outside party to direct, suppress, or shape our coverage. Commercial relationships fund our operations but do not govern our journalism.
Honesty and Accuracy
We publish only what we believe to be true. Before publishing a claim, we verify it against primary sources. When we cannot independently verify a claim, we say so.
We do not sensationalize, exaggerate, or misrepresent facts to generate clicks or engagement. Headlines accurately reflect the content of the articles they introduce. We do not write clickbait headlines that make promises the article does not keep.
When we are wrong, we correct ourselves promptly and transparently. See our Corrections Policy for details.
Fairness and Impartiality
We cover technology news and issues affecting Filipino readers without taking sides. When a story involves a dispute between parties – companies, government agencies, or individuals – we make reasonable efforts to represent all sides fairly.
We do not allow personal opinions, political views, or commercial interests to color our news reporting. Opinion and analysis content, when published, is clearly labeled as such and distinguished from factual news coverage.
Conflicts of Interest
Tech Pilipinas discloses commercial relationships that could reasonably be perceived as influencing our coverage. This includes:
- Advertising and sponsorship arrangements with companies we cover
- Affiliate partnerships that generate revenue from product recommendations
- Free products, review units, press trips, or other items of value received from companies
Receiving a product for review does not guarantee positive coverage. Our reviews reflect our honest assessment regardless of how the product was obtained. We return, donate, or disclose review units as appropriate.
Our editor-in-chief, Luis Reginaldo Medilo, does not hold financial stakes in companies covered by Tech Pilipinas in ways that could compromise editorial objectivity. Where a potential conflict exists, it is disclosed in the relevant article.
Treatment of Sources
We treat sources with respect and honesty. We do not misrepresent our identity or intentions when seeking information. We do not use deceptive methods to obtain information except in rare circumstances where the public interest clearly outweighs other considerations, and only with editorial justification documented internally.
Named sources. We prefer on-the-record sources. All quotes published on Tech Pilipinas are attributed to named individuals unless there is a specific, documented reason for anonymity.
Anonymous sources. We use anonymous sources only when the information is of significant public interest and cannot be obtained any other way. When we grant anonymity, we protect it. We do not reveal the identity of confidential sources under any circumstances.
Vulnerable sources. We exercise extra care when working with sources who may be at risk – whistleblowers, private individuals, or anyone whose participation in a story could expose them to harm. We do not publish information that could endanger a source without their informed consent.
Privacy
We respect the privacy of individuals, particularly private citizens who have not chosen public roles. We do not publish personal information, including but not limited to, home addresses, personal phone numbers, and private financial details, that serves no legitimate journalistic purpose.
Public figures and institutions accept reduced privacy expectations in their public roles. We cover their professional conduct, public statements, and organizational decisions. We do not intrude into areas of their personal lives unrelated to their public responsibilities.
Independence from Government and Political Influence
Tech Pilipinas does not accept direction from government agencies, political parties, or elected officials on what to cover or how to cover it. We do not suppress stories due to political pressure.
We cover government technology initiatives, digital policies, and public-sector announcements factually and without partisan framing. We apply the same scrutiny to government claims that we apply to claims from private companies.
Advertising and Editorial Separation
Editorial content and commercial content are clearly separated on Tech Pilipinas. Sponsored articles and paid partnerships are labeled at the top of the page. Native advertising is never designed to be mistaken for independent editorial content.
Advertisers do not receive advance review of articles, do not request coverage as a condition of advertising, and have no right to approve or modify editorial content.
Diversity of Perspectives
Tech Pilipinas serves a broad Filipino audience with diverse backgrounds, interests, and needs. We make reasonable efforts to include diverse perspectives in our coverage, across regions, demographics, and levels of technical expertise.
We do not exclude or demean individuals or groups based on gender, age, religion, ethnicity, economic status, or political affiliation.
Accountability
We hold ourselves to the same standards of transparency that we expect from the institutions and companies we cover. When readers raise concerns about our content, we take them seriously. When we fall short of our own standards, we acknowledge it and correct course.
Readers can raise concerns about our editorial conduct by contacting us at [email protected]. We review all substantive concerns and respond where appropriate.
