Caloocan City is a first class city in the National Capital Region (Metro Manila) with a population of 1,661,584 people (2020 census) which makes it the fourth largest city in the Philippines in terms of population.

The city is divided into two geographical areas: South Caloocan and North Caloocan. South Caloocan is the industrial and commercial hub of the city while North Caloocan is made up of residential subdivisions and resettlement areas.

The name “Caloocan” was derived from the Tagalog root word “lo-ok” (bay) because of its close proximity to Manila. Some historians, however, believe that it came from the word “sulok” (corner) because the old Caloocan was located at the corner of the old towns of Tondo and Malabon. Therefore, the word “Caloocan” is a play of the Tagalog word “kasuluk-sulokan” which means “innermost area.”

In 1865, Caloocan separated from Tondo and became an independent municipality. It became a city on February 16, 1962. Famous landmarks in Caloocan City include the Bonifacio Monument, San Roque Parish Cathedral, La Loma Cemetery, and the Caloocan Sports Complex.
