Meta announced on July 28 that WhatsApp users can now make and receive audio and video calls directly through WhatsApp Web, eliminating the need to download the desktop or mobile application to place a call. The update also introduces call transfer between devices, a waiting room for group calls, faster high-definition video, and background noise suppression.
For Filipino users, many of whom rely on WhatsApp alongside Messenger and Viber for personal and work communication, the web calling feature addresses a common limitation in shared or restricted computing environments. Users on office laptops that block application downloads, or on shared or public computers such as those in schools and internet cafés, will be able to join one-on-one and group calls from a browser without installing software. Meta stated that the browser-based calls carry the same end-to-end encryption as calls made through the WhatsApp mobile or desktop applications, with no time limits and no additional cost.
According to Meta, calls made through WhatsApp Web will include the same features available on other devices, including screen sharing, in-call reactions, and a dedicated Calls tab showing call history and favorites. A new call transfer function will let users move an active group call from one device to another without ending it; for example, starting a call on a mobile phone while commuting, then shifting it to a desktop or laptop upon reaching home or the office.
The rollout also includes a waiting room feature for group calls made through WhatsApp call links. When a user enables the “Require approval to join” setting on a call link, participants will be held in a waiting room until the host admits them. Separately, Meta introduced QuickHD, which is designed to deliver high-definition video within the first few seconds of a call, and a new noise suppression tool that filters background sound so a caller’s voice remains clear in noisy environments. The noise suppression setting can be toggled during a call.
Meta said the features are rolling out gradually and will become available to all users over time. The company did not specify a fixed schedule for full availability in the Philippines or other markets.
