Spotify is the most popular music streaming service with more than 300 million users worldwide. Spotify offers a free plan as well as a premium subscription that allows you to listen to ad-free music, along with other benefits. If for some reason, you no longer want to continue your subscription, you can cancel Spotify Premium anytime you want and revert to the free plan.
Subscribing to Spotify Premium is a no-brainer given the fact that it’s so inexpensive. For less than $10 a month, you’ll have access to millions of songs and podcasts without being interrupted by annoying ads. Spotify Premium plans are cheaper in less-developed countries like the Philippines and India where you can subscribe for as low as $2 a month.
Nevertheless, if you no longer want to pay for Spotify Premium, either because you want to save money or you found a better alternative, you can easily cancel your subscription. Cancelling Spotify Premium will not end your subscription immediately. Your Spotify Premium plan will only end on your next billing date.
After your Spotify Premium subscription ends, you will revert to the free plan which plays music in shuffle mode and with ads. You can subscribe to Spotify Premium again anytime you want.
Some Spotify users have found it difficult to unsubscribe from Premium because the Spotify app doesn’t provide an option to change your plan or cancel your subscription. You can subscribe to Spotify Premium on the mobile app but to change or cancel your plan, you will have to use a web browser instead.
How to Cancel Spotify Premium
Before you go ahead and cancel your Spotify Premium plan, make sure that this is something that you want to do. By cancelling your subscription, you will lose your premium benefits such as ad-free music, unlimited skips and offline streaming. If you changed your mind, you can renew your subscription but you will have to enter your payment details again.
Since the Spotify app doesn’t have a feature to change or cancel your Spotify plan, you will have to do this using a web browser like Google Chrome or Safari.
Open spotify.com/accounts and login using your Spotify email or username and password. You can also login using your Facebook, Apple or Google account if that is what you used to sign up to Spotify.
You’ll be taken to your Spotify account overview page where you can see your current plan.
Under “Your plan,” click CHANGE PLAN. Alternatively, you can click Available plans on the menu.
A list of available subscription plans will be shown.
Scroll down to Spotify Free and click CANCEL PREMIUM.
On the next page, you will be asked, “Are you sure you want to cancel Spotify Premium?”
Click YES, CANCEL to cancel your subscription.
You’ve now successfully cancelled your Spotify Premium plan. Your subscription will end on the date shown.
On your Account Overview page, your current plan is still Spotify Premium but it will change to the free plan at the end of the billing period. If you want to renew your subscription, click RENEW PREMIUM and enter your payment details.
You can still listen to music after you unsubscribe from Spotify Premium. However, you can only listen to music in shuffle mode and you can’t download any songs. You will also be shown ads on the Spotify app.
