You know the drill. You pay through GCash and then show the proof of payment to the seller. Part of the process is to take a screenshot of the transaction, which includes the GCash reference number, and then to send it to the merchant.
In most cases, a proof of payment is not needed because GCash immediately notifies you when money is transferred to your account. But just for the sake of record-keeping and to engender trust between seller and buyer, a proof of transaction – either in the form of a screenshot or the GCash reference number – is necessary.
You might be wondering what the GCash reference number is and how to find it. It’s actually pretty easy to find but most users don’t notice it because it’s hidden in plain sight.

What is the GCash Reference Number?
The GCash reference number is a set of numeric characters that is assigned to every transaction (e.g. send money, bills payment). It is a unique identifier that is automatically generated by GCash after the transaction is processed and completed.
The GCash reference number is useful for keeping track of your transactions and for verifying that the payment was received. It’s also needed when contacting GCash customer service for assistance.
This reference number is displayed on the successful transaction screen along with other important details such as the amount and the number of the payee. It usually starts with the words “Ref No.”

4 Easy Ways to Check the GCash Reference Number
So you already know where to find the GCash reference number. But what if you did not take a screenshot of the transaction screen? Can you still check the reference number?
Of course, you can. GCash keeps a record of all your transactions along with their corresponding reference numbers. As long as you still have access to your account, you can find the reference or transaction number.
View Your Transaction History
The quickest and most reliable way to check your GCash reference number is to go to the Transaction History screen of the GCash app.
Follow these steps to find your GCash reference number on the app:
- Open the GCash app and login using your MPIN or biometrics.
- Tap “Transactions” at the bottom of the screen.
- Select the transaction that you want to view.
- See the GCash reference number below the transaction details.
- Optionally, copy the reference number by tapping the “copy” icon beside it.
GCash only shows up to 15 transactions in the Transaction History screen. If you want to view older transactions, you can request your transaction records to be sent to your email address.
To make a request, scroll down the list of transactions and press the “Request transaction history” button (you can also tap the icon on the upper-right part). Then, enter the following details:
- Date Range – Choose the date range to be included in the transaction history, such as the last 7 days, 30 days, 60 days, or custom.
- From – If you selected a custom date range, select the start date of the report.
- To – Likewise, indicate the end date.
Click “Submit Request” to have your transaction history sent to your registered email address.
After a few minutes, you will receive an email that contains a copy of your transaction history in a PDF file. You may need to enter a password to open the document (read the instructions in the email for your password).
Open Your GCash Inbox
You can also find the reference number by going to your GCash inbox, which contains all the account-related messages and transaction notifications that you received.
Here’s how to find the GCash reference number in your app inbox:
- Open the GCash app and login to your account.
- Tap “Inbox” at the bottom of the screen.
- Select the message that you want to open.
- Find the reference number which is located at the end of the message and indicated by “Ref. No.”
Be sure to copy the reference number or take a screenshot of the message for safekeeping.
Check Your Text Messages
If you can’t access your GCash account for some reason (maybe due to an error or downtime), you may check your text messages for the reference number.
Due to the proliferation of spam, GCash has stopped sending SMS notifications for most transactions like sending and receiving money. However, you will still receive text messages for certain transactions such as subscription payments.
You can try rummaging through your text messages to find details about your previous GCash transactions. Just search for “GCash” and look for the transactions that have the reference numbers included.
Check Your Email
Another way to check your GCash reference number is to search your email inbox. This only applies for certain transactions where an email receipt is generated, such as bank transfers and bills payments.
To find the GCash receipts in your email inbox, just type “GCash” or “GCash receipt” in the search box. It should show the list of emails where a reference number is included.
The GCash reference number is usually indicated by “Ref No.” or “GCash Ref. No.”
Can You Track a GCash Reference Number?
You might be wondering if it’s possible to track a GCash reference number, similar to the tracking of mail and parcels.
As of this writing, it’s not yet possible to track your reference number in GCash. The reference number only serves as a proof of transaction and doesn’t let you verify that the money transfer has been received or the payment has been posted.
You can verify receipt of your payment or fund transfer by asking the recipient if they have received the money. For bills payments (e.g. Internet, electricity, credit cards), you may check your account with the company.
Parting Words
Now that you know where to find your GCash reference number, it’s now easier to keep track of all your personal and business transactions. If you deal with GCash a lot, make it a habit to request a copy of your transaction history and keep it for your records.
