Top 8 Things to Remember When Buying Gadgets Online

In today’s fast-paced world, access to certain gadgets has become a necessity rather than a luxury. For example, it can be difficult to imagine life in the Philippines without smartphones. Work and studies are likewise increasingly dependent on computers across almost all levels. Even some hobbies now require access to various devices to make things more enjoyable.

Fortunately, with the internet and online delivery at our disposal, getting anything and everything you need is simpler. No longer do you have to take time out of your busy schedule to visit some obscure store to special-order the gadgets you need for work or play. Moreover, with online shopping buy now pay later (BNPL) services, access to funding is no longer an issue.

Still, the convenience of these financial services comes with responsibilities. So, keep these things in mind whenever you’re buying gadgets online.

1. Research the Gadget Thoroughly

Don’t just rely on the brand reputation, since even the best brands put out unsatisfactory products from time to time. Before purchasing an item, take the time to read reviews and compare similar models across different online marketplaces. In particular, you’ll want to check for detailed reviews and user experiences to see if the device suits your needs. If possible, look for third-party reviews outside of e-commerce sites to get a more honest look at the gadget you’re after.

2. Check the Return and Warranty Policy

Before committing to a big purchase, always verify the return and warranty policy. Some stores might offer generous return windows, while others may be a lot more restrictive. You’ll want to make sure that the return and warranty process isn’t unnecessarily complicated.

Note that some businesses may require you to facilitate the return yourself, through a courier of their choice. While this is often reasonable for many types of products, this can be problematic for very large, fragile, or heavy appliances, especially if the courier demands complex requirements. If the return process seems excessive, consider choosing a seller who will arrange to have the item picked up at your address.

3. Look for Exclusive Online Discounts

In the Philippines, large online marketplaces like Shopee and Lazada often provide exclusive discounts for items bought directly from their website or app. Because gadgets tend to be somewhat pricey, these promotions can go a long way in saving you money. At the same time, retailers might also offer their own discounts, which can stack on top of the ones offered by the platform. Signing up for newsletters or following brands on social media can help you catch these limited-time offers, greatly reducing the cost of your gadgets.

4. Consider Buy Now Pay Later Options for Expensive Items

If you’re looking to spread out the cost of your gadget purchase, a BNPL service might be for you. It lets you break down the cost of big-ticket purchases into more manageable installments, avoiding the big hit from a one-time lump sum payment. Some providers even offer 0% interest for short-term payments, making it even more appealing.

Still, it’s important to ensure the BNPL app you choose offers transparent pricing, no hidden fees, and the ability to manage payments easily. The latter is crucial in making prompt payments, so that you can avoid incurring fees that you could have otherwise allocated for other purposes.

5. Check for Free Shipping Offers

While shipping costs are often quite modest these days, they can quickly add up, especially with bulky gadgets. Most major online retailers offer free shipping promotions, so always check for such deals.

Also, don’t count out pricier stores that offer this perk. In many cases, the savings on shipping can make the item worth it, even if it does cost more upfront.

6. Ensure Secure Payment

Never use platforms that don’t offer secure payment gateways. If you don’t recognize the payment gateway, either walk away or use a payment method that limits your exposure. Using trusted payment methods can provide an added layer of security.

Most importantly, only use a secure internet connection to complete online purchases. Public WiFi is extremely vulnerable to “man-in-the-middle” attacks that steal your payment data and other personal info, so you’re best off avoiding these connections for all your online shopping. If you have to purchase something while on the go, use phone data or a VPN to keep your data encrypted and your purchase secure.

7. Be Cautious of Unrealistic Discounts

Always be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true. If a gadget is being offered at an unusually low price, it could be a counterfeit product or have hidden fees. Always cross-check prices across multiple websites and check the store’s reviews and overall reputation to learn if the discount is real.

8. Factor in the Cost of Critical Accessories and Software

Unfortunately, gadget costs seldom end with the device itself. Devices nowadays often require accessories such as cases, chargers, or specialized software. For things like game consoles, for instance, the cost of games can potentially outmatch the cost of the hardware over the years. Don’t forget to factor these additional costs into your budget to avoid unexpected financial strains.

Don’t Settle for Less When You Shop Online

When done right, shopping for gadgets online just makes perfect sense. You get all the choices and potentially much lower costs. However, you want to follow these tips closely to ensure that you’re getting a quality product at a fair price. In any case, stay informed, check for any upcoming policies, and shop wisely.
