UnionDigital Bank, the digital banking arm of Union Bank of the Philippines, has become the first participating financial institution to offer the SSS Micro Loan Program, known as SSS LoanLite, through its mobile application. The program is designed for qualified Social Security System members, with particular emphasis on overseas Filipino workers.
For Filipinos who rely on SSS but have limited access to traditional bank loans, this gives another option for short-term cash needs, especially OFWs managing finances remotely while working abroad. SSS has more than 40 million members nationwide and among Filipino communities overseas, many of whom send remittances through digital banking channels similar to the one UnionDigital operates.
Under LoanLite, qualified members can borrow between ₱1,000 and ₱20,000, with the exact amount based on their SSS contribution record. Repayment terms run from 15 to 90 days, positioning the product as a short-term option rather than a long-term credit line.
The loan carries an interest rate of 8 percent per year, or roughly 0.67 percent monthly, plus applicable transaction and add-on fees. Interest and fees are deducted from the loan proceeds before disbursement, and borrowers see the loan amount, net proceeds, and repayment schedule before accepting an offer.
UnionDigital Bank president and chief executive officer Danilo “Bong” Mojica II described the initiative’s intent in a press statement.
“SSS LoanLite is a gateway to financial empowerment for Filipinos,” Mojica said. “This product is about giving Filipinos, especially our OFWs, a practical way to move forward when they need it most. We know how important it is to have access to timely financial support. By integrating SSS LoanLite into the UD app, we are making that support simpler, more accessible, and within reach wherever they are in the world,” he added.
To access the loan, applicants need a UD Save account through the UnionDigital app. Once approved, net loan proceeds are credited directly to that account. Borrowers can repay by funding their UD Save account before the due date for automatic debit, or through InstaPay or PESONet from another bank or e-wallet.
The arrangement links SSS member eligibility records with a digital bank’s loan distribution system, allowing qualified members to access smaller-value credit without visiting a physical branch. UnionDigital Bank has not announced a timeline for adding other lending partners to the SSS LoanLite program.
